President’s Update #3: July 26, 2021: Toddies with Tom – Recap

By: Tom Blackburn, P.E. G.E, F. ASCE, F. ACEC (Blackburn Consulting)

If COVID-19 taught us anything, it is the value of virtual meetings to easily communicate with friends around the world using virtual platforms. We plan to continue using these platforms to increase our educational and networking opportunities with GBA members.

On Friday, July 9, GBA held its first “Toddies with Tom” virtual gathering as an opportunity to meet with members and it was a great success!

About 25 GBA members gathered to connect, learn, and have some good old GBA style fun with summer shandy’s (50% beer and 50% soda) with light summer food pairings.

Presenters included David Coduto, President of Terra Insurance; Carrie Faulk, P.E. (BSK Associates), Chair of GBA’s Geotechnical Committee; and Chuck Gregory, P.E. (Terracon),Chair of GBA’s Resource and Collaboration Committee.

David told us about the extensive research that Terra has performed to identify the common business traits of firms that have low loss experience. David and Terra coined these traits the four “critical success factors”. David discussed the importance of each success factor and how they lead to lower losses.

Carrie presented different ways that member firms are storing field data and teed up topics for future committee assignments and GBA Conference presentations.

Chuck Gregory told us how the Resource Collaboration Committee (RCC) is preparing a summary and key-word log to improve access/retrieval to our valuable library of over 100 GBA Case Histories.

Our next Toddies with Tom is scheduled for September 19, 2021. GBA committees, staff and special guests will use this platform to communicate important GBA issues, establish and enrich relationships and just have some fun! Teresa Peterson has agreed to lead this committee with help from GBA Staff and me.
