GBA Webinars

GBA webinars cover a wide range of practice management/professional practice topics to help GBA members communicate with and better serve clients and potential clients, and successfully confront the business risks that private-practice professionals must deal with every day.

GBA webinars often start out as conference presentations that are so popular, people want to hear them again. So GBA developed GBA webinars to bring these presentations back in a format that offers the audience an opportunity to ask questions and have more interaction with the presenter.

Recorded webinars of course cannot offer live interaction, but you can still hear what questions other people asked. If you have a question that has not been answered, many of our webinar presenters are still associated with GBA and, in the spirit of sharing and collaboration that permeates GBA, would likely be happy to respond to questions they receive from GBA colleagues.

Select from the list below to learn more on a topic of interest to you. All GBA webinars are free to members – yet another way for companies to maximize the value of their GBA membership dues.

The Case of the Contaminated Project

The Case of the Contaminated Project
This video is only available to members; join GBA today to watch it.

A young geoprofessional trying to please the client gets hung up in a miscommunication. Fortunately, a huge loss was averted by a limitation of liability provision, but – arguably – an even bigger loss occurred when the firm lost what was an extremely important client. How did all of this affect the young geoprofessional? He’ll tell you himself, with “himself” being none other than GBA Past President Kurt R. Fraese, L.G., the CEO of GeoEngineers, the company he worked for at the time his good deed was punished. Learning what went wrong is important, because the same thing could happen to you. And Kurt will also tell you how he won that client back, simply by putting himself in the right place at the right time. (55 minutes)

Client-Focused Contract Negotiations

Client-Focused Contract Negotiations
This video is only available to members; join GBA today to watch it.

This presentation focuses on tips and tactics to effectively negotiate difficult contract provisions by focusing on the needs and concerns of the client, rather than those of the consultant, to better persuade the client to accept the consultant’s terms. Rather than a general discussion, the presentation focuses on specific provisions that consultants deal with on a daily basis to give the consultant practical tools to negotiate their real-world contract issues. Originally presented by Michael J. Yost, Vice President/General Counsel, Terracon Consultants, Inc. on September 24, 2010. (69 minutes)

Michael J. “Mike” Yost, Esq. (Terracon) discusses how firms can seize opportunities to increase their value by effectively consulting with clients about project risk. Resolving to Win the War against Commoditization
This video is only available to members; join GBA today to watch it.

Commoditization. Marginalization. These are issues reputable geoprofessionals confront every day, thanks to not just a few “bad apples.” And because we are not yet winning the battle, subsurface issues are the most common cause of construction-industry disputes. Don’t give up! We can win the battle against commoditization and marginalization, providing you know what the tools are and how to apply them. Vic Donald does! Terracon’s National Director of Geotechnical Services, Vic says that the commoditization/marginalization battle is one that he wages every day, and frequently wins! Learn how. (39 minutes)
